Success Story Medak District

I own 9 acres of a commercial mango garden on the main road of Karimnagar highway at Pragnapur, Gajwel mandal, Medak District (A.P) India. It is about 45 kms from Secunderabad station and drive of 50 minutes by car. It is a well established mango garden with 500 plants and an average age of around 12 years and yields good commercial value fruits.

Till year 2000 I used inorganic chemicals -- mainly fertilizers for the soil and pesticides like Monocrotophos, Endosulphan for pest control. I use to apply twice inorganic fertilizers and three to four times chemical insecticide sprays in a year. Typical spraying is around October / November / December / January every year.

Keeping aside the fertilizers and pesticides cost, the labour expenses and time consuming was high. Annual overall expense worked out to Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000 and the annual financial benefit was around Rs.80,000 to Rs. 90,000 including expenses. In the year 2001 –2002, I experimented on my own intiative reducing the use of inorganic fertilizers by 50% and also restricted insecticide sprayings to plants only twice in the year. Instead of the normal chemicals, I substitued them with Fortune Biotech's Aza and Neem Cake products. To my surprise the yield in my garden was higher than normal and more importantly, the higher yield resulted inspite of last year's low yield of mangos in all the surrounding areas of my gardens. I could observe 25 – 35 % of increase in the yield and size of the mangoes were uniform by 70 % with large size graded as "Commercial". Further, the fruit drop of mangoes has reduced by 15 to 20 %. I sold the crop last year (2001 – 2002) for Rs.1,71,000/- which is almost double compared to last 3 years average. The expenses including Labour /Urea / Fertilizer / Pesticides have reduced by 40 to 50 %. and I earned more than a 100,000 rupees profit after all expenses.

To my surprise the yield in my garden was higher than normal and more importantly, the higher yield resulted inspite of laKeeping aside the profits, the notable change I could make out for future, is the following:

2. Less labour involved

4. Better health of trees for future by avoiding inorganic chemicals usage

6. Resistance in the plants
7. Higher commercial value & size for Mangoes.
